Are YOU the Victim of Identity Theft?

We can help, and you do not even have to file bankruptcy!

I am sorry to report that there are over 10,000,000 people in the United States who are the victims of identity theft! Each year, thieves – sometimes strangers, sometimes “friends” and relatives – steal personal information from consumers and use that information to obtain credit. They open up charge accounts, take out loans, buy cars, and even rent houses with someone else’s identity. Then, they disappear and leave the business looking for the original consumer. That consumer could be YOU!

I have had clients who have been the victim of identity theft. One woman I know started receiving phone calls from a company in Texas, claiming that she owed them for a repossessed car. She had never even BEEN to Texas, in her life! As a result of false information, her credit was seriously impaired.

In some circumstances, there has been no theft. Did you know that an estimated 40% of all credit reports contain mistakes? There are many files with “mixed” information – your credit files get crossed with someone else’s!

What should you do? First, I recommend obtaining a credit report from each of the three Credit Reporting Agencies. What you receive will actually be a “Consumer Disclosure” of what is on your credit report, but that should be enough to get you started. Learn how to obtain your credit report

Once you have reviewed your credit report, please make an appointment to come and see me. I can help you to correct information on your credit report. Together, we will contact the Credit Reporting Agencies to demand they correct your file. BY LAW, they must correct false information. If they do not, they can be sued under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. In addition, you may be able to sue the furnishers of the false information (companies that wrongly report negative information on your credit report).

DO NOT use “credit repair” agencies! Many of them are frauds.
